Revamping My Library with Custom Genre Markers

I'm thrilled to share how I transformed my library with handcrafted genre markers that add both organization and style to my bookshelves!

The Design Process

I started by designing simple circular genre tags in two variations - some with holes and others without. I wasn't initially sure which would work better - standing on easels directly on the shelves or hanging from above - so I decided to experiment with both approaches.

I prototype with scrap paper and a cuting machine, before putting things into laser, same SVG works for both!

Material Selection

With both black and brown bookshelves in my library, I faced a colour dilemma. Should I go with classic black and white for a modern look, or warm maple and walnut tones for a cozy, rustic vibe? I couldn't decide, so I created samples of both to see which would complement my space better.

Crafting the Markers

Using a laser cutter, I created the bases and frames for my genre tags. For variety, I tried engraving one of the tags. While I liked the engraved look, I found the clean, stylish appearance of the non-engraved versions slightly more appealing.

Assembly Tips

Titebond Original proved to be the perfect adhesive for this project! When attaching the genre names, I use a helpful technique: leave the laser-cut base in place as a guide for letter placement, then carefully hold the letters in position while removing the template. This ensured perfect alignment every time!

Okay, this was so silly, that I took a photo. I should be more attentive and not just listen to music.

Display Options

For the standing markers, I created simple black and white easels, with the black ones ultimately looking more sophisticated against my shelves. For the designs with holes, I developed a hanging frame system. Honestly, both the standing and hanging versions turned out beautifully!

Next Steps

I'm now working on creating additional markers and putting the finishing touches on my bookshelf organization. I can't wait to complete the project and enjoy my newly magical and cozy reading space!
